Whitby

I spent a year living in Brooklin (North Whitby) and I continue to spend time in Whitby on a regular basis, frequenting the local businesses.

Whitby has a population of about 135,000 which has been growing steadily for many years now. It is known for its scenic lakeshore and highly rated marina, parklands and nature trails as well as being an excellent location for people commuting into Toronto for work.

Whitby has two historic downtown areas – Whitby and Brooklin. The south end of Whitby is considered the business centre of Durham Region, where the north end has several rural communities including Brooklin, which has expanded quite a bit over the last 20 years but has retained its small town feel.

3 Advantages of Whitby

  1. Whitby has the perfect mix of the city life and access to nature – you can live close to schools and shopping, and you are not far away from the scenic lakeshore and large conservation parks.
  2. The average home price in Whitby is lower than in Toronto.
  3. Transportation: Whitby is well connected to Toronto and surrounding areas. It has the Lakeshore East GO Train which runs every day, all day long, which makes it convenient for travelling for work, and also for getting to and from Toronto sports events in the evenings and weekends. Whitby also has extensive highway system including the 401 and the 407 going east/west, and the 412 going north/south. It also has a great bus system served by GO Transit and Durham Region Transit.

Education

Whitby has many Public schools and Catholic schools which are publicly funded, and many offer French Immersion programs, as well as three post-secondary schools.

Durham College

The Centre for Food (CFF) is Durham Region’s first-ever post-secondary presence focused on the field-to-fork concept, which is based on the harvesting, storage, processing, packaging, sale and consumption of food – in particular the production of local food for local consumers.

UOIT – University of Ontario Institute of Technology

UOIT is known for its programs in Business, Education and the Sciences.

International College of Natural Health & Traditional Chinese Medicine

This college has diploma programs in Acupuncture, Aromatherapy, reflexology and herbal medicine.
